The case against alternative currencies

Local Currencies, Exchange Trading Systems, and Time Banks are all part of a new social movement that aims to restrict money's purchasing power within certain geographic area, or community. According their proponents, these restrictions may contribute building sustainable local economies, supporting businesses creating “warmer” relations. This article inquires whether the overall enthusiasm surrounds alternative currencies is justified. It argues potential benefits not sufficient justify they impose on power. Turning into effective channels change, by increasing scope strength, could severely hinder pursuit justice, in way probably even necessary for achieving objectives. The paper concludes large-scale limitations are, therefore, undesirable.
